[Fun Facts]
We bowled at Firebird Lanes, played mini-golf at the Dixie Putt-Putt, and swam
Sandy Beach (or the "Gravel Pit").
We ate burgers at Chaps, drank root beer at the A & W, and pigged out on a
"trough" at Farrell's (remember the "Zoo"?).
We shopped in Drayton Pains at Federal's and Kresges, hung out at the Pontiac
Mall and bought our letter sweaters and varsity jackets at Griswold's
A trip to the corner store and we could buy Twinkies for twelve cents, a pack of
gum for five cents, and a bottle of pop for twelve cents and a two cents deposit.
Less than $5.00 would fill an empty gas tank, less than $4,000 would buy a new
car and our parents could buy a new house for less than $30,000.
We went to the Waterford or Pontiac Drive-ins (with a car loaded with friends), go
to the Big Boy after football or basketball games, and stop at Baskin-Robbins
for a twenty cent ice cream cone.
All gas stations had attendants who pumped your gas, checked your oil, and
washed your windows.
School lunches were thirty-five cents and some of our favorites were: Turkey Slop,
Pizza Burgers, Greasy Cheese Pizza with apple crisp or pudding with cherries.
We belonged to the Varsity Club, G.A.A., and went to the dances after the football
games.
Our homecoming floats were built on flat trailers and pulled by cars around the
track (they are now constructed in a smaller mode, put on wagons-as in
Radio Flyer - and pulled by students around the track!).
Our parents would enjoy going to the Old Mill for dinner, McDonald's was our
enjoyment, and then there was Mr. Big...
And what about the "Grassers" at the Gravel Pit?
There were no Condos, no Waterford Wave Pool, no Pine Knob, on the Palace. (We
had apartments, townhouses, lakes, and Silverbell.
There was the crosstown rivalry between WK & WT, WT & WM, and MM & WK,
but we all did have one common rival - those nasty Clarkston Wolves!
We listened to the Beatles, the Monkees (yeah, right!), the Who, Guess Who,
Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Bob Seger, and the Rolling Stones...
Some things have changed, some places have changed, some things are gone,
some places are gone, but the memories will last forever.
What was a favorite memory of yours?
